Saturday afternoon project. Polished off a 1 hour speedsculpt of a Klingon head from earlier in the week, added facial hair and blocked in the mane. Top image – decimated and rendered in mental ray for Maya. Bottom image – Zbrush screenshots.

First post of the new year. Still working on my Bionic Man but in the meantime here’s a work in progress that is back and forth between the backburner and when I’m in the mood. Rendered in Mental Ray for Maya.

Decided to keep going with the Steve Austin model and give it the full body treatment. I needed a body to go with the previous head sculpt so I quickly blocked one out using the Dynamesh feature that matched the proportion of the head sculpt. Once I had something roughed out I re-topologized the dynamesh body and bust as one single clean retopologized mesh and projected the details onto that. The details carried over quite nicely and required very minimal cleanup. Once that was done I started sculpting the body and this is the current work in progress at that point. I’ll add the bionic arm and legs as a ‘cutaway’ version of the model and probably create a costumed version as well. We’ll see how it goes.

Study of actor Lee Majors as Colonel Steve Austin from the 70s show The Six Million Dollar Man. I loved the show as a kid and wanted to do sculpt for a while but never got around to it until now. I recorded the zbrush session to about the 3 hour mark in a 10 minute timelapse. Total sculpting time was around 3.5 hours. Imported into Maya and rendered in Mental Ray.

EDIT 11/20/11 – Updated mental ray render and zbrush screen.
